The Kuffner Observatory

The Kuffner Observatory

In the beautiful Viennese district of Ottakring, there is another special feature besides the famous brewery. A charming observatory from the 19th century awaits you on the Gallitzinberg. In the style of historicism, it was built during the imperial and royal era by the industrialist Moritz K. K.. Kuffner, who was also the owner of the Ottakringer brewery. The classic building still serves its purpose as a small Viennese planetarium.

Kuffner Sternwarte Vienna Stay Apartments

During the tour you can inspect a large collection of astronomical instruments of the 19th century. Among them there are four telescopes with large refractor, meridian circle and vertical circle. These were restored in the years between 1993 and 2000. Today they are used exclusively in the museum or for educational purposes.

Visitors can visit this historic observatory all year round and, weather permitting, even get an astronomical guided tour of the starry sky over Vienna. And this with the help of the large telescope from 1886.
