Schönbrunn

SCHÖNBRUNN

Schönbrunn Palace, together with its artistically designed parks, is considered a baroque synthesis of the arts. As such, Schönbrunn was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. This also makes it one of Austria's most important cultural assets.

History

From the middle of the 18th century, the Baroque palace was used as a summer residence of court life under Maria Theresa. From that time on, the place was also used for meetings between international government leaders and diplomatic circles. Originally, the building dates back to Leopold I in the 17th century. He commissioned Johann Fischer von Erlach to build the complex.

LOCAL PARK

Schönbrunn Palace Park is one of the most popular recreational areas in Vienna and dates back to the design of Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg.

The baroque park impresses not only with impressive fountains, statues and monuments. The ornamental gardens with bush sculptures, the palm house, the orangery and the botanical garden also contribute to the splendor of this green work of art. Even the maze is so glamorous that it is a pleasure to get lost there.

In addition to the Carriage Museum with its impressive fleet of vehicles belonging to the imperial family, there is another highlight of Schönbrunn:
As a landmark of Vienna, the Gloriette is the jewel of the park Schönbrunn. According to plans by Hetzendorf, this collonade was realized in 1775. Perched on a hilltop, the Gloriette is an impressive eye-catcher and vantage point in the park. It also provides a summer setting for outdoor concerts and photo shoots. The early classicist building is also a popular destination for excursions.
