Brunnenmarkt & Yppenmarkt
FOUNTAIN MARKET & YPPEN MARKET
Brunnenmarkt and Yppenmarkt are two connected markets in Ottakring, 16th district of Vienna. Merged into one, this piece of Vienna represents the longest street market in Europe. After the Naschmarkt, the Brunnenmarkt is the second largest Viennese market and is also called "Orient around the corner". This is because the culinary delights on offer here are famous for specialties from the Middle East.

But Austrian organic farmers are also represented here on Saturday. And compared to the Naschmarkt, the Brunnenmarkt is still a lot cheaper. Because although the audience combines a colorful mix of languages and cultures, the Brunnenmarkt is even less touristy. After all, visitors mainly stock up here for their daily needs. But in recent years, the down-to-earth street market has been joined by a hip local scene that focuses on alternative designer and organic goods.
On Yppenplatz, market life continues even in the evening, when the market stalls have already closed. Because here you can find cocktails and live music in addition to international cuisine in hip bars. Whether you prefer Turkish, Indian, local rustic, Slovenian or Italian? At Brunnenmarkt, one or the other pleasant surprise is guaranteed to await you.
Art and culture at Yppenplaz
But besides the culinary art, there are other artistic attractions at Yppenplatz. For example, the square provides a stage for international graffiti artists. Thus, the wall graffiti are a characteristic frame for the Yppenmarkt ambience. In addition, the "ArtSocialSpace" in the Brunnenpassage provides a stage for the multicultural scene. Here, plays, dance shows, workshops, concerts and exhibitions are performed in German, English, Turkish, Arabic and Persian.
In addition, there has been an annual festival since 2013. The so-called StraßenKunstFest (Street Art Festival) delights young and old every year on the first weekend in June. Then there are impressive performances by artists from all over the world. And these always take place under a common motto. In addition, there is a comprehensive supporting program in cooperation with other cultural institutions in Vienna. Then you can participate sometimes until midnight in dance and theater workshops, production of handicrafts, acrobatics or simply night shopping.
Ambience and origin
The architectural design of the Brunnenmarkt also differs from the Naschmarkt in that it appears naturally grown and less planned. The dismountable, mobile stalls further enhance the bazaar character.
Originally, the Brunnenmarkt was created in the 18th century around a fountain, which served as a water supply in the Hofburg. Thus, the naming is also quickly explained. The Brunnenmarkt is located on Brunnengasse, which leads into Yppenplatz. There, in turn, is the Yppenmarkt. In 2009, both market areas merged into one large street market.
