Academy Theater
ACADEMY THEATER
The Akademietheater in Lisztstraße in the 3rd district has been used by the Burgtheater as a second venue since 1922. With its full name as "Theater der Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst", it is the result of many efforts by the Burgtheater ensemble to find a venue on a smaller scale. This is found in the Akademietheater primarily due to the unique construction of the stage. For this enables an extraordinary closeness between actors and audience.

After the Akademietheater was completed in 1913 according to plans by the architects Helmer, Fellner and Baumann, it was finally able to take on the Burgtheater under Max Paulsen. The opening play in the Akademietheater was Goethe's "Iphigenie auf Tauris.
The building in Lisztstraße survived the Second World War undamaged, and was finally reopened on May 19, 1945 with Ibsen's play "Hedda Gabler".
Since then, the Akademietheater has become very well established in the Viennese stage world and ranks among the best theater venues. As such, it also regularly wins prizes at renowned theater festivals.
Celebrated international performers and directors have also contributed to the first-class reputation of the Academy Theater!
