Theater an der Wien

THEATER AN DER WIEN

The Theater an der Wien on the Linke Wienzeile in the 6th district has been considered the city's "new opera house" since 2006. Together with the Raimund Theater and the Ronacher Theater, it forms the "Vereinigte Bühnen Wien".

Originally, this theater developed in the 18th century from a traveling stage of the Viennese suburbs, which represented a scene away from the courtly circles. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that the theater was given a permanent framework in the form of the Empire-style building on Linke Wienzeile.

Theater an der Wien

After performances of all theater genres were held here, the Theater an der Wien discovered the "Golden Operetta Era" with Johann Strauss and Carl Millöcker. Later, the "Silver Operetta Era" with Franz Léhar also found its way into the building. After the Second World War, the ensemble of the bombed-out State Opera used the Theater an der Wien as temporary quarters.

While the theater was known for its high-profile performances and premieres of German-language musicals in the 1990s, the Viennese Classical phase began in 2006, the Mozart Year. Since then
