Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom

THEATER NESTROYHOF HAMAKOM

Vienna's second district, Leopoldstadt, boasts a theater of a special kind. For in the Art Nouveau building on Nestroyplatz, built by Oskar Marmorek, is the Hamakom Theater as the successor to the "Jüdische Künstlerspiele". Here, from 1927 to 1938, famous Yiddish ensembles from Galicia, Budapest, Vilna and Moscow performed alongside Austrian troupes. But the Second World War put a temporary end to the theater.

Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom

It was not until 2004 that cultural activities began again in the Nestroyhof.

After extensive renovation work, the theater in the Nestroyhof went into operation under the name "Hamakom" (Hebrew for "the place").
Today, it is considered one of the most important middle stages in Vienna and sees itself as an interface for Jewish culture and modern, innovative theater work. In this sense, the concept of the Hamakom is unique both in Vienna and on an international level.

As a historical monument and projection screen, the Hamakom deals with historical and current issues from a socio-political perspective.
