Theater in the Josephstadt

VIENNA'S ENGLISH THEATER

In addition to the English Theatre, Vienna's 8th district holds another jewel of the Viennese theater scene. The Theater in der Josefstadt is the oldest theater in Vienna, which has been in constant use since its inception. Thus, the Theater in der Josefstadt is not only known for top-class spoken theater in Vienna, but also soaked in Viennese theater history.

Theater an der Josephstadt

Since its opening in 1788, the Theater in der Josefstadt has been a meeting place for dynamic artistic circles and today sees itself as a modern theater. But in addition to contemporary authors, classics of the theater scene are still performed here.

Johann Nestroy already made his career start as an actor in this theater in 1829. Ferdinand Raimund chose the location in 1834 for the premiere of his play "Der Verschwender".

Another branch of the Theater in der Josefstadt is the so-called Kammerspiele near Schwedenplatz. Here, the Josefstadt shows preferentially comedies with Austrian "grandees" of the theater world.
