Burgtheater
CASTLE THEATRE
At the Burgtheater, an actor has reached the Olympus of the Austrian stage world. As the largest spoken theater in Europe, it represents a unique fusion of tradition and the new.

Originally, the Burgtheater began around 1800 in a ballroom of the Hofburg, which was used as a theater for a short time. Even in this informal setting, the Burgtheater quickly gained international renown and continues to set the tone for German-language theater worldwide.
Nowadays, the Burgtheater has also found a fitting setting in the representative magnificent building on the Universitätsring. The palace was designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer and completed in 1888. It was completely renovated from 1948 to 1955 after severe war damage.
The fine arts also find their place in the building. On a one-hour guided tour, visitors can marvel at a self-portrait by Gustav Klimt, among other things. After a look up at the magnificent ceiling paintings, you also get a look behind the scenes!
