ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS: PAINTING GALLERY
The Picture Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts is an absolute insider tip for a visit to Vienna. Because compared to the big museums, the collection of the Academy of Fine Arts is manageable and also has it all.
Originally, the Academy was founded by the emperor at the end of the 17th century. But it was not until 1822 that Count Lamberg Sprinzenstein bequeathed her unique collection. It consists of 800 paintings of the highest quality.

Because in the Picture Gallery you get to see unique works of the great Dutch and Flemish masters of the 17th century. Rembrandt, van Dyck and Rubens meet here in an almost familiar setting. But Murillo's children playing dice are also part of the collection. A special highlight of the picture gallery, however, is the legendary Altar of the Last Judgment by Hieronimus Bosch.
In keeping with the building of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts on Schillerplatz near Opernring, representatives of Viennese Classicism can also be seen in the Picture Gallery. For you can also admire paintings by Titian and Cranach here.
In keeping with this, the Academy building is in the classicist style and goes back to the design of the architect Theophil Hansen.
Since July 2017, the Academy building has been undergoing extensive renovation, which is why the Gemälde Galerie is temporarily on view at the Theater Museum on Lobkowitzplatz.
Here, the Academy of Fine Arts also hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists.
